Dobare elephant camps, Madekeri is an effort to help lost elephant calfs by the Forest Department, Karnataka. Elephants are known to live in herds and time and again one stray or the other is found loitering about. These young ones may or may not survive, given the adverse living conditions and ever encroaching human population. Dobare is the place they are bought to and trained so that they can survive.

The environment provided is as natural as it can get. The calmness and serenity of the place is hard to miss and as time stands still, reflecting on the merits of such a place is hard to question. For example the elephants are chained and kept in shackles at all times except for the time of bathing. They are also made to give rides to tourists who come along.
When asked the same question, one of the officials said that this is actuallly humane as the elephants treated like children.
"If they ere not bought here, there are chances that they may die in the wild and we dont want that to happen do we?" came the simplistic reply. The question still remained if keeping in shackles and making them give rides become humane?
Well the official still said " They are alive arent they, they should be greatful for that.."
